Textile, Clothing and Footwear

Tasmanian manufacturers are thriving in niche sectors of the Textile Clothing and Footwear (TCF) sector against a background of structural change. One of the State’s earliest and best-known TCF businesses, Blundstone Boots, a household name dating back to the 1840s, produces 200,000 pairs of gumboots a year at its Hobart plant.

Waverley Australia buys wool locally and scours it at its Launceston factory for the production of luxury rugs, blankets and other items. Tascot Carpets Pty Ltd buys scoured wool to produce customised woollen carpets at its East Devonport factory. Tascot is Devonport’s major employer. Neale Edwards Pty Ltd deals in sheepskins, providing a useful outlet for local graziers.

Casaveen, a midlands producer of high-quality woollen garments, epitomises the corporate agility needed to survive in challenging times. With their long-standing wool-production business under pressure towards the end of last century through drought and falling demand for wool, the McShane family turned a value-adding hobby into a highly successful business. Along with the Tasmanian Wool Centre at Ross, their Oatlands mill and restaurant have become a new type of tourist attraction.
