Education
Tasmania’s education sector is steadily building up its international enrolments. Because of the clean, safe environment, value for money, a wide range of subjects, low cost of living and high standards of teaching, increasing numbers of international students are learning in Tasmanian institutions. The range of subjects is enormous, with special, local expertise in hospitality, Antarctic and Southern Ocean studies, environment and wilderness studies, aquaculture, agriculture, fisheries and the arts.
Government schools in Tasmania are comprehensive and co-educational. All offer ESL (English as a Second Language) programs, so international students are accepted directly into schools – there are no English language pre-requisites and students prepare for their mainstream courses within each school. Schools work hard to support and care for the well-being and learning of each individual student.
Privately owned schools in major Tasmanian centres also offer high-standard education to international students.
Tasmania's post-Year 10 State schooling system was reformed in 2007-09 to improve retention rates by providing three options for the final two years of high school (previously known as 'college' in Tasmania). Students can now choose to attend an academy that is geared to prepare them for university; they can elect to attend a polytechnic where practical and academic learning delivers vocational pathways; ot they can enrol in a training enterprise where their skills can be fast-tracked in a working partnership with prospective employers.
The University of Tasmania (UTAS), established in 1890, has major campuses in Hobart and Launceston, as well as facilities in the north-west. UTAS has built a record of scholarly achievement and academic leadership that places it in the top band of Australian universities. It has more than 12,000 students in seven main schools, including 750 overseas students from 40 countries. The university has a reputation for quality research work, particularly in the fields of aquaculture, forestry, Antarctic and Southern Ocean studies, epidemiology and ore deposit and mineral exploration studies.
UTAS offers international students one-semester study abroad or exchange programs, as well as full bachelor, masters and research degree programs. Students can learn English at UTAS's English Language Centre
