Big win for our fish ’n’ chips

Tasmanian Gourmet Seafoods, in an out-of-the-way corner of the Hobart airport precinct, has taken out the People’s Choice award for selling the nation’s best fish and chips. The shop mustered 95,000 votes for Sydney’s National Seafood Awards to outscore fish ’n’ chip outlets in all other States and territories. Owners, Michael Blake and Tabitha Dodson, credited their win to hard work and using only fresh ingredients and never frozen ones. “We’ve been cooking for three years,” Mr Blake told The Mercury. “Prior to that we dealt just in fresh fish. I’m very fussy. Tasmania has great seafood and we wanted to cook it right … we just went on word of mouth. We thought if we got the product right, then news would spread about how good it was.” The delighted couple now has plans to expand. The Northern Territory’s Frying Nemo got the nod from National Seafood Awards judges.
