The good oil

A golden oil from Tasmania’s northwest has just bagged silver. The cold pressed canola oil, from Hill Farm Preserves, has recently been awarded silver at the Sydney Royal Fine Food Show Awards, with criteria including smell, taste, and look. The oil also impressed the judges with its embrace of Tasmania’s clean, green, brand. Not only is it GM-free, but it is made from seed grown at a nearby farm. Like all products from Hill Farm Preserves, it is also made from natural ingredients and is bottled and labelled by hand. The range also includes oils infused with Cumin, Garlic, Ginger, Lemon and Wild Mountain Pepperberry. Hill Farm also produces artisan jams, vinegars, fruit paste, chutneys and mustard. Its products are exported to Japan, South Korea and Sri Lanka.

Regional bistro Australia’s best

It’s not fine dining. And it’s certainly not a cutting edge hipster eatery. However, a bistro in Tasmania’s north west has been named the best in the country. The Formby Hotel, in Devonport, has taken out the gong for best bistro in regional Australia. The accolade was presented recently on the Gold Coast, at the Australian Hotels Association National Awards for Excellence. Operations Manager at The Formby Hotel, Mark Cadle, told The Advocate: “We get a lot of tourists who come to the state and leave pretty quickly, so hopefully this will help put Devonport on the map and give people another reason to stay for a while and have something to eat… It adds to the overall attraction for Tasmania which really does have a great reputation for food and dining.” Other Tasmanian winners at the AHA awards were Frogmore Creek, which won best regional restaurant for the second year in a row, and MACq 01 which was named overall hotel of the year in accommodation division.

Wine funding cause for celebration

Tasmania’s peak wine organisation has welcomed news that the State Government plans to boost the sector with extra funding. The State Government announced it will provide $600,000 to Wine Tasmania over the next four years, to help grow its global profile. The funding will help with market development and wine tourism activities. Wine Tasmania CEO, Sheralee Davies, welcomed the Tasmanian Government support and said: “The Tasmanian wine sector has deliberately focused on growing demand for our high-quality wines which has generated growth in wine supply. This has contributed to Tasmania’s position as one of the highest value wine regions, and it is critical that we continue to drive global demand for Tasmania’s wines.” The Tasmanian wine sector conservatively contributes $115 million annually to the state’s economy and has experienced steady growth over many years.
